Scene 1 of 3
Wei Chen knelt on the cracked earth. His bamboo staff trembled in his grip. Dust swirled around his boots, catching the afternoon light.
Master Feng Tao’s voice cut through the silence. "Fifteen years. Not one pillar shattered." The words struck like hammer blows.
Wei Chen opened his mouth. A hand raised stopped him. His jaw tightened. No explanation would matter now.
The disciples parted like a tide. Wei Chen walked between them, his shadow long and broken. His staff brushed against the ground, a rhythm of defeat.
Days passed. The mountain air was thin, sharp with pine and wind. Wei Chen reached Serpent's Rest Mountain, his steps slow with shame.
A spring gurgled nearby. He sat beside it, listening to the water’s song. It was softer than the sect’s silence.
A crane struck at a viper. The snake moved like flowing water, not stone. The bird’s wings beat in frustration.
The viper didn’t fight back. It let the crane exhaust itself. Wei Chen’s breath caught. His mind turned the scene over, over, again.
The river stones were smooth, worn by time. He reached out, running his fingers over their surface. The water’s patience hummed in his veins.
What if strength wasn’t in breaking, but in yielding? The thought bloomed, quiet but persistent. He traced the river’s course with his eyes.
A laugh echoed through the trees. "You’re staring at the water like it’s got answers."
Wei Chen turned. A young woman stood nearby, her stance loose, her eyes bright. "I’m Lin Yue," she said, stepping closer. "You’re not the first to look like that."
She shifted her weight, arms loose at her sides. "What’s on your mind?" Her voice carried a challenge, a question.
Wei Chen stared at the river. The water didn’t fight the rocks. It shaped them. He looked up. "What if cultivation isn’t about breaking?"
Lin Yue tilted her head. "Then what is it about?" Her grin was sharp, bright. "Tell me."
Wei Chen exhaled. The weight in his chest felt lighter. "About flowing," he said. "About moving with the world, not against it."
Lin Yue’s eyes lit up. "That’s not weak," she said. "That’s smart." Her voice was full of conviction.
Wei Chen looked at her. The river ran on, unshaken. He wondered if this was the beginning of something new.
