The dust motes hung like judgment in the afternoon light. Lirien’s fingers twitched at the empty saddle, its leather cracked with neglect. Her breath came in shallow huffs, each one a reminder of her uselessness.
The door creaked open. A shadow stepped inside, quick and sure. Lirien’s jaw tightened. She knew that gait.
"You're the criminal they warned me about," she said, voice brittle.
Kael’s grin was sharp as a river stone. "And you're the general too sick to mount a horse." She tossed her cloak aside, revealing a map inked with lines and symbols.
Kael spread the parchment across the table. Her calloused fingers traced invisible currents. "Your cavalry can't fight on water, General." Her voice was low, deliberate.
Lirien’s eyes narrowed. "You think I don’t know the river?" Her fingers curled around the chair arms.
Kael tilted her head. "But you don’t know what it can do. These narrows—"
Lirien’s laugh was dry. "You expect me to trust a smuggler?"
Kael’s eyes gleamed. "I expect you to win." She tapped the map. "These blind spots—"
Lirien’s breath hitched. Her hands trembled. The map’s lines blurred slightly in her vision.
"Show me," she whispered. Her voice cracked, but her grip on the chair was iron.
Kael leaned in. "The river’s not your enemy, General." Her finger hovered over the map. "It’s your ally."
Lirien’s chest rose with a shuddering breath. Her fingers traced the lines like a prayer.
Kael stepped back. "The imperial ships won’t know what hit them." Her grin was a blade.
Lirien’s eyes burned with something like hope. "What do you need?" Her voice was a whisper.
Kael’s smile softened. "A general who’s willing to listen." She rolled up the map. "And a river that’s ready to fight."
Lirien nodded. Her shoulders straightened, just slightly. The weight of her shame seemed lighter. Just for a moment.
Kael turned to leave. The door creaked open again. Lirien called out, her voice stronger now.
"Tell Tovin to meet me at the docks."
Kael paused. "You’re sure?"
Lirien’s laugh was barely a breath. "I’ve got nothing left to lose."
Kael slipped out, the wind catching her cloak. Lirien watched her go, the map still warm from her touch.
The river below gurgled. It had been waiting.
