Scene 1 of 3
The fluorescent lights buzzed like a swarm of wasps. Elena arranged the final compounds in perfect parallel lines. Her medical alert bracelet caught the light as she transcribed Pierre’s hand-drawn diagrams.
Margot burst through the door. Her jade bracelet twisted tight around her wrist. She pleaded in Mandarin before switching back. “Elena, please—whatever this is, we can find another way.”
Elena closed her eyes. Took three deliberate breaths. Spoke with clinical precision. “Actually, Margot, we’ve tried every other way.”
“This is the only formula left.” She drank the mercury-laced mixture. The laboratory dissolved into golden light.
Her tongue tasted belladonna. The metallic tang of mercury burned her throat. Her hands trembled as she reached for the vial.
Margot lunged forward. “Elena, wait—”
The light swirled. Shadows stretched across the lab bench. Glass beakers glowed with an inner fire.
Elena’s breath came in shallow gasps. Her vision blurred. The world narrowed to the vial in her hand.
“Elena, listen to me!” Margot’s voice cracked. She reached for her friend’s wrist.
The golden light coiled around Elena’s fingers. Her body lifted off the floor. The laboratory dissolved into stars.
The air smelled of ozone and old paper. The walls shimmered with impossible geometry.
Elena’s feet touched solid ground. The light receded. A voice echoed without sound.
“Welcome, the apothecary.”
The room was a void of shifting light. Shadows moved without form.
Elena turned. A figure stood in the center. Its voice overlapped itself. “You have chosen the path of the pharmacist.”
Her pulse thundered in her ears. The air tasted of iron and something sweet.
“I’ve chosen the only path left,” she said.
The figure tilted its head. “We will see if your choice is as wise as you believe.”
The light coiled around Elena’s arms. Her body lifted again. The world behind her faded.
“Elena, no!” Margot’s voice was distant now.
The figure stepped closer. Its form flickered between scholar and light. “The choice is made.”
Elena’s fingers brushed the light. The void swallowed her whole.
The laboratory was silent. Margot stood alone. Her jade bracelet hung loose.
She dropped to her knees. The vial lay empty on the floor.
The fluorescent lights buzzed on. But no one was there.
