The Tengu at the Door
Scene 1 of 3
Scene 1 of 3
The fog curled around the gas lamps like ghostly fingers. Yuki traced the silver fox pendant at her throat, its cold edge a constant reminder of the spirit within her. The silence of Berkeley Square was broken only by the distant clatter of carriages.
A dull thud echoed through the hallway. Her breath caught in her throat. The sound was too heavy, too final for a stray cat or drunkard.
She moved to the door, her steps slow and deliberate. The peephole revealed nothing but shadows and swirling mist. The fog thickened, pressing against the glass as if trying to force its way inside.
The door burst open with a crash. A tengu messenger fell at her feet, feathers matted with something dark and metallic. The creature's wing bent at a sickening angle, its breath ragged and broken.
" Hunters..." the tengu gasped, blood trickling from its beak. "Cold iron... they come for those who bridge worlds..."
Yuki crouched beside it, fingers hovering near the pendant. The air smelled of ozone and something sharp, like dried blood. The tengu's feathers crunched under her touch as she assessed the damage.
The creature shuddered, its eyes fluttering. "Mei Lin... she warned you..." The words slurred, the tengu's body going limp.
Yuki dragged the tengu inside, her movements careful but urgent. The floorboards creaked beneath her, a reminder of the fragile balance she walked. The pendant at her throat pulsed with a quiet energy.
She pressed the silver fox against the tengu's forehead. A tremor passed through her, the kitsune spirit stirring beneath her skin. The air thickened, charged with something ancient and unseen.
The tengu's breath steadied. Its wing twitched. Yuki exhaled, her hands trembling. The silence that followed was heavier than the fog outside.
The tengu's eyes fluttered open. "They come for you next," it whispered, its voice raw. "They know."
Yuki's heart pounded. The disappearances Mei Lin had spoken of were no longer distant whispers. They had come to her door. And they were not done.
She reached for her pendant again, its cold edge now burning against her skin. The choice was no longer hers to make. The world had caught up to her. And it was not kind.
The fog outside swirled faster, as if sensing the shift. Yuki turned from the window, her path now clear. She would seek answers. She would find the truth.
Even if it meant becoming the hunted.
