Scene 1 of 3
Cassian stepped into the sterile glow of Aria’s Medical Bay.
The antiseptic stench clung to his skin. His back ached from the match.
Aria was already waiting, her face pale under the overhead lights.
“You’re late.” She didn’t look up from her tablet.
“Traffic.” He grinned. “Literally.”
Her eyes flicked to him. “That joke gets worse every time.”
She pulled him behind a privacy screen. Charts were spread across the counter.
Her hands trembled as she traced a pattern on his back.
“Where does it hurt?” she asked.
“Everywhere.” He winced. “Especially where your fingers are.”
She pressed harder, following the welts.
“Your avatar’s blade hit here,” she said. “Seconds ago.”
He shuddered. “That’s not possible.”
“It is.” She leaned in. “Every fighter’s real wounds match their avatar’s.”
A monitor blinked in the corner. His avatar’s health bar dropped.
His pulse spiked. The monitor’s beep synced with his heartbeat.
“Who else knows?” he asked.
“No one.” Her voice cracked. “Not even the sponsors.”
She showed him a chart. A junior fighter’s avatar had died.
His real body had no wounds. Just a still heart.
Cassian’s throat tightened. “You’ve been tracking this?”
“For weeks.” She nodded. “Since the first death.”
Her eyes pleaded. “You’re the only one who understands.”
He adjusted imaginary glasses. “This reminds me of 83 AD.”
“Of what?” She frowned.
“When the gladiators started dying for real.”
A beat of silence. The monitors beeped in unison.
“Tell me you’re not comparing me to a Roman slave.”
“I’m comparing you to a historian.” He met her gaze. “This is your chance.”
She took three deep breaths. “To save lives.”
“Or end them.” He grimaced. “Depending on who’s listening.”
Her hands clenched the chart. “We need proof.”
“We’ll get it.” He nodded. “Before the next death.”
The monitors flickered. His avatar’s health bar dropped again.
His real pulse matched the rhythm.
Aria’s eyes locked on his. “You’re not just a fighter, Cassian.”
“I’m a historian.” He smiled. “And I’m running out of time.”
